Essential Questions on Chapter 27
1. Why were entrepreneurs, industrialists, and bankers such significant and controversial figures in American politics and business in the late 19th century?
They were so controversial because they made the United States thrive, but at the same time sold stock for five time what they where really worth.
2. Why did the growth of industry contribute to the development of a conservation movement?
The growth of America’s industry required large amounts of land and natural supplies to build such buildings. Resources such as trees and fertile soil were becoming scarce and needed to be stopped from being used up, so organizations were developed so that land could not be destroyed by federal and private needs.
3.What strategies did the labor movement use to try to improve working conditions? Who were the leaders of the labor movement?
To try to improve working conditions Mother Jones and many organizations and committees led strikes and passed laws that banned the hiring of children. Fortunately 43 states out of 50 agreed with these terms and applied the laws.

Graduation Speech Essay
These past three years have been filled with positive and negative experiences, but that’s life.
What these past three years have taught me is that there may be negatives in life, but it all balances out later in life.
Within the first couple of months of sixth grade some students began bullying me because of my quiet personality me somewhat of a gullible person I was. Some called me names and tried to embarrass me in class, but in the end were unsuccessful. In my mind still lives a world of imagination and innovation that was almost destroyed by peers. Unfortunately, my ideas were not always appreciated or accepted in school. Luckily, overlooking events such as these was my approach.
Despite these negative draw backs, I reached out to a person who seemed to be very quiet and shy like me. Sammy was in my core class, so I walked up to him to discuss an assignment. He talked quietly and spoke very little. We talked sometimes during lunch that year.
Although I do not talk to Sammy as much as I use to, I still consider him a very dependable friend. When I look back on that day I realize that if I had not had the courage to walk up to him and “break the ice”, I would still be the same quiet person. To me this experience was very significant to my life because it helped me realize I wasn’t the only person who was the “quiet kind”.
These interactions such as the one with Sammy taught me to look at life in a positive way that influences me to this day. This comes to show that one single person can influence you but you must step up and “be the change you want to see in the world” (Gandhi) Also that we must always look at the bright side of life and not dwell on negative experiences.
My advice for all is that life will have its peaks and valleys, but we are the individuals that influence our own lives significantly. We are free to live our lives the way we desire and create a great future for ourselves. As I saw once in a movie: “Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long. We KEEP MOVING FORWARD, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we’re curious…and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” -Walt Disney

[Meter] Linx Definition/Example/Significance/Picture

Meter
My definition of a meter is a series of stressed and unstressed syllables in a poem that make up a line in a poem. The meter gives the poem rhyme in the way it is to be pronounced. Meter in a poem is usually represented by several dashes and curves above the words to respresent stressed and unstressed syllables.

Example:

The significance of meter is to understand why certain words are selected to be in a poem because they correspond with a pattern depicted from the poem itself.

..                                     ..                                             ..
     ..                                   ..                                     ..
           ..                                 ..                             ..

                     ..                                   ..  ..  ..

[Rhyme] Linx Definition/Example/Significance/Picture

Rhyme

My definition of rhyme is two words in two separate lines that have prefixes or suffixes that sound alike.

Example:

Roses are red

Violets are blue

I love poetry

You should too!

The significance of rhyme is to create a fun and interesting sound for the poem.

[Rhythm] Linx Definition/Example/Significance/Picture

Rhythm
My definition of rhythm is a certain tone in a poem that shows a pattern. It can be shown be syllables in each line or the order in which events take place.

Example:
Roses are red
violets are blue

After the first two lines it is easy to predict that the next line will rhyme with the first line.

The significance of rhythm is to help the reader predict the next couple of lines in the poem.

[Onomatopoeia] Linx Definition/Example/Significance/Picture

Onomatopoeia
My definition of an onomatopoeia is a word that is spelled oddly because it creates a sound.

For example: In a cartoon or comic book they use many onomatopoeias like "SMACK" or "BANG".

The significance of an onomatopoeia is to represent a sound to help the reader understand the storyline and auditory imagery.

[Personification] Linx Definition/example/Significance/Picture

Personification
My definition of personification is a phrase that gives an inanimate object human like features.

For example: In the movie Cars the characters are able to talk, obviously in real life cars cannot move the grill of their front to form words.

The significance of personification is to create realistic characteristics for real life inanimate objects.
