[(Extended) Metaphor] Linx Definition/Example/Significance/Picture

Extended Metaphor
My definition of an extended metaphor is a phrase in a poem that compares multiple ideas without using the linking words "like" or "as".

An example of this is:
"They put every thing on the line to get what they want"
Of course there was no actual line in which they put something on it.

The significance of an extended metaphor is to help the reader to understand what the poet means by comparing two ideas to create a better understanding of the poem.

Metaphor
My definition of a metaphor is a term used to relate or compare two events or objects.

For example someone could say "She shot for the Moon and missed by a mile", they could be talking about someone who was attempting something, but ended in complete and utter failure. Obviously there was no cannon or spacecraft involved.
Another example is someone could say " She's on the road for failure." Obviously the person did not drive on any road whatsoever.

The significance of a metaphor is to make the poem easier for the reader to understand. If there were no metaphors, most poems would be quite confusing and no one would bother reading them because of the lack of understanding.
