My definition of a tone in a poem is based on the speaker point of view or perspective. It can be negative or positive.
For example:
They came with the large rails
as they take our land
we all do not hail
we do not fight, but take a stand
The significance of a tone in a poem is to provide the reader a better view of what the speaker's view is on the event. In this case it is from the point of view of the Native Americans as the Americans take their land to build the Transcontinental Railroad (left) that would later be connected at Promontory Summit, Utah with the golden spike (right).
