my definition of a couplet is a poem that each stanza consists of only TWO lines. Both lines of a couplet are extremely important because the first line of the couplet will not make sense if the second line of the couplet is missing. (It is the same with the second line also) Most couplets complete each other with a ryhme, but not all the time.
Like the poem below a couplet poem can also be only two lines making it it even more significant.
Silly Sally
When Silly Sally irons her clothes, they come out looking awful.
She did not read the label and her iron was meant to waffle.

The significance of a couplet is to use short length lines to build up the topic of the poem. In a way, couplets are like the building blocks of specific poems. (hense the name "couplet poems") Without couplet poems (and the ocassional stanza to finish off the poem) a poem would not make sense to the reader. Couplets have proven to be a very important key part in poems today.
