My definition of a speaker in a poem is NOT the person reading the poem, but the character depicted in the poem. In most poems the speaker's name isn't even mentioned.
Example: In this poem, the speaker is just defined as just "the girl holding the V sign"
ricky was "L" but home with the flu
Lizzie our "O" had some homework to do
Mitchell, "E" prob'ly got lost on the way
So I'm all of love that could make it today
The significance of the speaker is to provide or create a direct line between the message the poet is trying to imply and you.

not the speaker speaker
