My definition of a meter is a series of stressed and unstressed syllables in a poem that make up a line in a poem. The meter gives the poem rhyme in the way it is to be pronounced. Meter in a poem is usually represented by several dashes and curves above the words to respresent stressed and unstressed syllables.
Example:
The significance of meter is to understand why certain words are selected to be in a poem because they correspond with a pattern depicted from the poem itself.
